Who is First

Under the old covenant, the formula was: First you then God. First you behaved then God would bless you. First you forgave others and then God would forgive you. If you did not forgiven others you were not forgiven.

Under the new covenant, the formula is: First God then you. Because God had freely forgiven you, so you must freely forgive others. First God gave you the gift of righteousness now you walk in it.

Righteousness is the basis of blessing and God’s favor. Jesus came and fulfilled all the requirements of the law on your behalf so that all the promises and all the blessing can be yours. You can read through the old covenant and claim all the benefits of its promises because of Jesus. Isn't that wonderful? Now you read the Old Testament with very different eyes, don’t you?

Paul taught this in 2 Corinthians 1:20, “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes' in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God.”

Wow! All God’s promises made throughout the Scriptures have become “yes” to us in Christ and it is our job to simply say “so be it” (which is what the word amen means). So let's take a closer look at how the Bible views righteousness.
